Installing Roof Vent Flashing

Begin by removing the shingles at the affected area and removing old flashing if present.

Drip edges are strips of flashing material that run along roof eaves and rakes to prevent water from seeping under the finished roof along its edges. After selecting an area to install from inside the building square the template between the roof rafters and outline with a marker. Then nail the new l shaped flashing under the builder s felt but above the fascia board. Use roofing nails to install the l shaped flashing flush with the roof and wall then cover it with roofing cement and reattach the roofer s felt. The metal flashing must overlap the material not the other way around. Using a sawzall cut any roofing nails in the area of the lower mounting plate flush with the sheathing. The tools needed are readily available at your local home improvement store.

Roof flashing is standard around any pipe vent. However over time the flashing can wear out and allow water to penetrate the interior of your home. It s soldered to a roof flange that layers into the shingles. The shape of vent flashing is typically a cylinder with a wide flange at the base which is lapped into the shingles as the roofing is installed.

If you do not wish to form your own corner flashing you can buy pre bent pieces and cut them to size or use a piece of corrugated aluminum which is easier to bend.
