How To Install A Wall Light Fixture Without A Box

If you have an old light fixture that is not attached to the wall or ceiling with a junction box you should repair the light fixture by removing it installing a junction box and installing a new fixture.

Depending on the type of feature you re using you may need to screw the fixture to it. For example if you have a light fixture that doesn t need a box for mounting but the wiring connections are not protected by some kind of cover then you can t use the fixture without a junction box. This can apply to different types of wall light fixtures with basic wiring. Wrap the wire around the screw then cinch the nut down to hold it.

On a flat surface attach the adjusted chain to the light fixture. Use chain pliers or pliers with a screwdriver to open the link on the end of the chain. Drill a 1 2 inch hole in the feature if there isn t one already and pass the fixture wires through it. I like this easy install heavy duty ceiling hook.

You can t install a light fixture without a junction box but the fact that there s no box at the spot where you want to install the light doesn t mean you can t install the light. Thread an 8 32 nut onto the screw. Drywall saw or utility knife. Or if a fixture meets all of the criteria of a box but lacks a cable clamp don t use it without a box.

Adjust the length of the chain to the link that best matches your desired length. Light fixtures that simply protrude from the ceiling or wall without a junction box are a fire waiting to happen. Attach the chain to the screw collar then hold the light fixture up against it.
